A Scenic Road Trip to Atami: Ocean Views, Onsen Spas, and Mt. Fuji Vistas

Atami is a coastal city in Shizuoka Prefecture, famous for its seaside hot springs, fresh seafood, and as a popular getaway from Tokyo.


Lunch at Gagamaru (Tonkatsu Koshiage)

Before arriving in Atami, we stopped in Izunokuni for lunch at Gagamaru, a small eatery known for its crispy tonkatsu sets. The set included generous portions of side dishes, beautifully plated. Despite the affordable price, the taste surpassed expectations—one of the best tonkatsu meals we’ve had in Japan.

Next, we headed to Izu Panorama Park, where a ropeway leads up to a scenic hill offering some of the best panoramic views of Mt. Fuji. From the summit, we admired not only the snow-capped peak of Fuji but also Suruga Bay and the gentle slopes of the Izu Peninsula. This spot is highly recommended for nature lovers and photographers alike.

We checked into Resorpia Atami in the afternoon. The hotel is slightly dated but very clean and spacious. From our room, we enjoyed a stunning sunrise over the ocean. Parking is limited, so reservations for car spaces are advised.

Dinner at Kimi-no-Hamayaki (Seafood Izakaya)

This casual seafood restaurant is run by a local fisherman and offers fresh catches grilled on the spot. We enjoyed grilled shellfish, squid, and fish alongside cold draft beer. The atmosphere was friendly, relaxed, and authentically local.

We ended the night at Ocean Spa Fuua, one of the most popular day-use onsens in Atami. With wide open-air baths and views of the Pacific, the facility was as soothing as we remembered. It’s an ideal way to unwind after a day of exploring.

Day 2: Coastal Walks and Family Fun in Izu

After checking out, we took a relaxed stroll around Atami’s eastern coastal area. The walkway offers ocean views, palm trees, and a refreshing sea breeze. It’s a quiet contrast to the busy train station area.

A short drive south led us to Jogasaki Coast, known for its dramatic cliffs and suspension bridge. The coastal trail is scenic and suitable for all ages, with several photo spots along the way.

Mount Omoro

For panoramic views inland, we visited Mt. Omoro. The gentle climb is worth it for the observation deck overlooking the Izu Highlands.

Izu Granpal Park

Our last stop was Izu Granpal Park, which offered fun for the entire family. From dinosaur-themed play areas to giant slides and an evening illumination display, the park caters to both kids and adults. We spent several hours here and left with smiles all around.

Getting to Atami

By car

From Tokyo, take the Tomei Expressway or Odawara-Atsugi Road via Route 135. The drive takes about 2 hours, depending on traffic. Parking can be limited at some accommodations, so check in advance.

By Train:

The fastest way is via the JR Tokaido Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Atami Station (about 50 minutes). Local JR lines also connect Atami with nearby cities like Odawara, Mishima, and Ito.
