Japan Travel Itinerary

While some people say Japan is expensive because they are thinking of Disneyland, Universal Studio Japan and many more, I’ve found it to be much more affordable than expected—especially when you consider that almost every corner feels like a tourist attraction. Take local parks, for example. They’re beautiful and totally worth a visit, and many are completely free, like the Tokyo Imperial Palace or the life-sized Gundam in Odaiba.
You don’t have to splurge on an expensive ticket for the Tokyo Skytree observatory either. You can enjoy the same breathtaking views for free at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.
With these tips, you can enjoy Japan without breaking the bank!
Travel like Local
Japan is full of incredible places to explore, but most tourists tend to flock to the same top spots—like Shibuya Crossing, Hachiko, Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Tower, Kyoto, Osaka and of course, Mt. Fuji. While these iconic attractions are definitely worth seeing, they often come with long lines and big crowds, which can be exhausting, especially if your time is limited.
Instead of spending hours waiting in line, why not channel your energy into discovering some hidden gems? For example, when I visited Asadokoro Kaigan in Aomori, in northern Japan, I was blown away by its beauty. It’s about an hour from the city, and you’ll likely feel like the only foreigner there.
The trains are charming, often painted with cute anime characters, and although they might look a little old inside, they’re still clean and comfortable. Plus, when you arrive at the station, you simply drop your ticket into a box—there’s no one checking!
The walk to Asadokoro Kaigan was peaceful and quiet, and for a moment, we thought we might be the only ones there. It seemed so empty that we wondered if it was worth it. But once we arrived, we were stunned. The place is serene, uncrowded, and filled with migratory birds—and the best part? It’s completely free. I could’ve easily spent the whole day there.
Asadokoro Kaigan is just one of the many off-the-beaten-path spots I highly recommend visiting in Japan. If you’re looking to explore beyond the usual tourist traps and want a customized Japan travel itinerary, I’m here to help! Check out my travel blog for more recommendations, or book an appointment with me to plan your perfect trip. And don’t worry—it’s totally free!
