It’s our winter vacation in Japan and we are so excited to go to our first destination- Zao Ropeway. Zao Ropeway offers a thrilling adventure to the snowy heights of the Zao Onsen resort. It is located in Yamagata prefecture and about two hours away from Ueno station. For this trip, we used JR Tohoku Pass to save travel fare.

Things to do in Zao Ropeway
Scenic Ropeway ride
The main attraction of Zao Ropeway is the cable car ride itself. We enjoyed a breathtaking journey as the ropeway takes us from the base station to the summit of Mount Zao (Jizo Sancho Station). Take in panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, valleys, and the picturesque winter landscape.
Snow monster viewing
As we ascend in a cable car towards the summit station (Jizo Sancho station), we witness this so-called snow monster. Snow Monster known as Juhyo is a result of Siberian wind and heavy snowfall. We barely see it with our naked eye due to bad weather on the top.
Dining at Summit Restaurants
There are restaurants and cafes at the summit where you can indulge in local cuisine while enjoying panoramic views. We were too hungry so we had our lunch at the restaurant adjacent to the station. Warm up with a hot chocolate and a delicious meal, adding to the overall experience of your visit.
Hiking and Nature walk
Zao Ski Resort provides access to hiking trails and nature walks. Explore the scenic beauty of the mountains, whether it’s enjoying cherry blossoms in spring, vibrant foliage in autumn, or the serene snow-covered landscapes in winter.
Due to the strong winds and heavy snowfall on the day of our visit, we opted not to go far from the station. We decided to take some photos, play around, and enjoy the moment.
Ski, Snowboarding & Snowshoe trekking
Zao Ropeway offers exclusive winter activities, ranging from skiing and snowboarding to snowshoe trekking. Ski and snowboard equipment rentals are conveniently available at the ski center. Whether you’re a beginner or simply looking to enhance your skills, worry not – experienced instructors are on hand to provide lessons and help you make the most of your winter adventure.
