Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building

If you want to see the panoramic view of Tokyo from the top without throwing some cash. You should visit Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, also known as “Tocho”. This building is located in Shinjuku and is often visited by tourists and locals as it houses two observation decks, the North and the South observation decks. It provides a stunning view of Tokyo and even Mt Fuji. The entrance fee is completely FREE.

South Observatory: 

Opening time:  9:30 – 21:30
Close: 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month. If closing days falls on holidays, observatory will be open but it will be close on the following day.
 

North Observatory: 

Opening time:  9:30 – 17:30
Close: 2nd and 4th Monday of every month. If closing days falls on holidays, observatory will be open but it will be close on the following day.

Can you see Mt Fuji from Tokyo?

Yes! You can definitely see Mt. Fuji from Tokyo especially here in Tokyo Metropolitan Government building. 

 

To reach the observation floor, take the dedicated Observatories Elevator located on the 1st floor of the main building. (Please note, use the front entrance on the first floor during weekend and holidays). Upon exiting the elevator, head toward the “West Direction“. 

 

 

We enjoyed the view of Tokyo Metropolitan from 45th floor of Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. If the weather is nice, you can clearly see the tip of Mt Fuji.

Tokyo Projection Mapping

When the sun sets, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building invites everyone to experience its spectacular night time show.

 

In February of 2024, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government No. 1 Building in Shinjuku, Tokyo started a new projection mapping show. This 13,905-square-meter display is now the world’s largest permanent show, certified by Guinness World Records.

How to go to Tokyo Metro Government Building?

The buidling is located at  2 Chome-8-1 Nishishinjuku, Shinjuku City, Tokyo 163-8001. To go here, you can ride via:


Train (three options)

1. Directly connected to Tochomae Station on the Toei Subway Oedo Line

2. Take a walk (~10 minutes) from the west exit of JR Shinjuku Station

3. Take a walk (~10 minutes)from Nishi-Shinjuku Station on the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line

 

Bus

1. Exit at Shinjuku Station from the west exit (underground bus stop).

2. Take the Toei Bus or Keio Bus (Tokyo Metropolitan Government Circulation).

3. Get off at “Tokyo Metropolitan Government First Main Building”.
