Asadokoro Kaigan: A Winter Wonderland
The winter season at Asadokoro Kaigan witnesses the arrival of a diverse range of migratory birds, making it a birdwatcher’s paradise between November to March. Check the Ministry of Environment website to know about the current view of Asadokoro Kaigan.
Elementary school students diligently recorded the arrival and departure dates, along with the daily maximum populations, of migrating swans on the Asadokoro tidal flat in Hiranai town, Aomori Prefecture, Japan, for a span of over 50 years, from 1956 to 2010.
These birds travel thousands of kilometers to escape the frigid temperatures of Siberia and other northern regions, finding solace and sustenance along the shores of Asadokoro Kaigan.
How to go to Asadokoro Kaigan?
Ride Aomori railway line
From Aomori Station, ride the local train (Aomori railway line) and get off at Kominato station. Travel fare is around ¥690 but it is free if you are using JR East pass.
We have a very nice view of snow fields on our way to Kominato station. It is very satisfying seeing this beautiful view right in front of our eyes and it feels like we are locals here since we barely see foreigners inside the train.

From Kominato Station, take a leisurely walk of approximately 30 minutes to reach Asadokoro Kaigan. While the walk might seem lengthy, I assure you, it’s entirely worthwhile.
