Situated along the beautiful coastline of Shizuoka Prefecture, Shirahama Beach is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. It’s perfect for anyone looking to enjoy the natural beauty and peace it offers. 

 

As we are going to our way to Shirahama beach, we really cant help but to stop here at Ogasaki wing. It is a must-see viewpoint offers a stunning look at the beautiful white sand beach of Shirahama in Shimoda. There’s a small, free parking lot with toilets and benches. It’s conveniently located right by the roadside when traveling Shirahama beach.

If you live in a tropical country like mine with plenty of beautiful beaches, your standards are already high—think pure white sand and clear water. To my surprise, Shirahama Beach met all my expectations and more, even though it’s a public beach.

Reaching the serene shores of Shirahama Beach from Tokyo is a delightful journey in itself, showcasing the seamless connectivity of Japan’s transportation network. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate your way:

By Train

Tokyo Station to Izukyu-Shimoda:

1.  Buy a shinkansen ticket in advance. 

2. From Tokyo Station, go to platform 9 of Odoriko line. Ride limited express Izukyu-Shimoda. 

3. Exit via 出入口 then head south.

4. Go to 下田駅(バス)[shimodaeki bus].

5. Stop at 白浜海岸(バス)[Shirahama coast]

Travel time: three hours
Travel cost: 6580 yen (One-way)

 

Bonus Tip

If you want to explore places outside of Tokyo, like Shirahama Beach, but don’t want to spend too much money, think about getting a Tokyo Wide Pass. It costs 15,000 yen. With this pass, you can ride JR trains and JR buses, including the bullet train, as many times as you want for three days in a row. 

By Car

Route: For those who prefer driving, take the Tomei Expressway from Tokyo and exit at the Numazu Interchange. From there, follow the signs to the Izu Skyline, which offers a scenic drive through the Izu Peninsula, eventually leading you to Shirahama Beach.

Travel Time: The total driving time from Tokyo to Shirahama Beach is approximately 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic conditions. The route offers a picturesque drive, with opportunities to stop and admire the stunning landscapes along the way.
