Best Guide: Okutama Camping Site 2023

Summer in Tokyo can be relentless, so we decided to trade the concrete for cedar trees and fresh river air. This time, our escape led us to Okutama—specifically, the Hikawa Camping Site, tucked alongside the Tama River. It’s a spot that draws both casual day-trippers and overnight campers looking for a breather from the city rush.

Whether you’re here for the riverside breeze, a BBQ with friends, or simply a quiet night under the stars, Hikawa hits that sweet spot between accessible and refreshing.

Just another road trip going to Hikawa camp site in Okutama

Last Saturday, a friend suggested we head out for a quick camping trip—not a bad idea, especially with the long weekend and all of us feeling a bit stir-crazy in the city. We didn’t have to go far, but getting out of town with my friend’s family already felt like a breath of fresh air.

The drive turned out to be its own kind of highlight. Rolling past old wooden houses, lush green mountains, and weaving through tunnels and over bridges, the scenery kept us looking out the windows the whole way. It was one of those road trips where the journey was just as fun as the destination.

1. You may cook or grill in front of your tent.

Overall, I really enjoyed my stay here at Okutama camping site. It would be perfect if we spent the night. To be honest, it is my first time camping here in Japan and it already set the bar high. The nature and their accommodation make me wanna go back again next year.
