Looking for a scenic and budget-friendly way to enjoy the Alps in Japan? Let me share our 1-day trip to Matsumoto City Alps Park—a hidden gem where you can admire snow-capped peaks, ride a 630-meter-long roller slide, and relax under cherry blossoms—all without spending a yen on admission.
We discovered this park while traveling in Nagano last April for the Toyama Alpine Route. After our stay in Hakuba, we made a spontaneous stop here before heading back to Tokyo. It turned out to be one of our most memorable experiences—perfect for families, couples, or solo travelers looking to enjoy nature and adventure on a budget.

ToggleWhy Visit Matsumoto City Alps Park?
We visited in April, right after exploring the Toyama Alpine Route. Staying in Hakuba gave us easy access, and before heading back to Tokyo, we wanted one last look at the Alps. This park offered exactly what we needed—free admission, peaceful views, and fun activities.
1. Breathtaking Panoramic Views (Alps in Japan)
From the observation tower at the Nature Museum, you can enjoy sweeping 360° views of the Northern Alps, the Matsumoto Basin, and even the Utsukushigahara Highlands. It’s a perfect photo spot, especially during cherry blossom season or autumn foliage.
2. Ride the Alps Dream Coaster
Alps Dream Coaster ride Fee:
Adult: 410 yen
child: 200 yen
The park’s most exciting feature is the Alps Dream Coaster—a 630-meter-long roller slide that winds down a gentle hill. And yes, adults can ride too! It’s thrilling, safe, and completely free.
3. Adventure Zones for Kids and Adults
The Children’s Adventure Plaza is more than just a playground. It includes:
-
Climbing walls
-
Rope bridges
-
Mountain-like obstacle courses
-
Multiple slides
Even grown-ups will find themselves having fun here.
4. Relax Under the Sakura Trees
The spacious lawns are lined with cherry blossom trees, which bloom a little later than downtown Matsumoto. Bring your own bento and enjoy a spring picnic with a view of the Alps.
5. Light Snacks and Ice Cream
Food trucks appear occasionally, especially on weekends. You’ll also find ice cream stands for a sweet treat after exploring. But we recommend packing your own lunch, just in case.
